Scottsburg High School sophomore Rachel Stauter rushed around in the early morning hours as she and two dozen other SHS and Scottsburg Middle School choir students prepared to perform in the 2017 Nashville Christmas Parade in downtown Nashville, Tenn.

“It was busy. It was non-stop,” said Stauter, who is in the advanced choir class at SHS. “I’ve never done anything like it before. I really enjoyed it.”

To be part of the 64th annual parade, the Scott County School District 2 students had to learn the holiday music they had to perform along with the choreography. The students spent hours learning the routine at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville.

“They had to learn their music very fast,” said Ashley Kruth, choir teacher at SHS and SMS.

From the direction of a professional choreographer and musical director, the students took the routine to the streets of the parade route. The parade route started on North First Avenue and Brandon Street and traveled south toward Broadway, ending at North Eighth Avenue. The parade passed by famous sites and historical spots, such as the Ryman Auditorium, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and Bridgestone Arena.

“They learned about how to show professionalism,” Kruth said. “They learned about Nashville in general.”

On the day of the parade, the SMS and SHS students walked for about two hours along the parade route with musical acts such as MercyMe, Debbie Gibson, and Shenandoah, among other artists and groups. The students also made new friends out of the 1,000 students who participated in Music City’s annual holiday parade.

“It was a really good collaboration,” Kruth said. “It was like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade but think Nashville and Christmas.”
