For Scottsburg High School senior Malachi Carr, the opportunity to play tennis in college just fell into place.
“The whole school is amazing. The people are amazing. I couldn’t ask for anything more,” Carr said about his future alma mater.
With a pen in hand, Carr signed to declare his intent to attend Johnson University in Knoxville, Tenn. to play tennis in the fall.
"Malachi is going to be a solid player, and I am excited to get him to Knoxville and see what he can do in the fall,” said Seth Hale, Johnson University head tennis coach in a press release. “[...] He is a great kid that is going to fit in well with the dynamic of our team and is going to represent Johnson University the right way."
For the last seven years, Carr has played tennis at Scott County School District 2. He ended his high school career with a 39-14 record and a senior season record of 16-6 at number two and three singles. He was undefeated his year in third set matches and brought home the victory over Jeffersonville, the first win in SHS’ history over the Red Devils.
“His style of play is going to be a physical style that wears players out and can use his own athleticism as a weapon. In addition to a promising singles player, Malachi was also 22-8 as a doubles player which will help him make an immediate impact,” Hale said in a press release.
Carr loves tennis because of its competitive nature.
“It’s very competitive, and it’s something I’ve thought that was fun,” Carr said.
Before signing, Carr visited the college and spoke with the Royals tennis players before meeting with Hale. At Johnson University, Carr connected to the private Christian college’s campus and community.
To attend, Carr was offered a scholarship to attend; he is in the top 20 percent of his graduating class academically. The college is part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
“It kind of fell into place,” Carr said.
