When Scottsburg High School senior Isaac Everitt recalls all of the sports he has participated in during his high school career, only one sticks out.
“I really like the team bonding part of it,” Everitt said. “When you play tennis, you win or lose your spot. It’s an individual sport within a team.”
Since his freshman year at SHS, Everitt has participated in six sports: soccer, tennis, swimming, bowling, track, and golf.
“I love to stay in shape,” Everitt said. “You meet a lot of people.”
But graduation does not mean the end of his athletic career — Everitt will play tennis at Trine University in Angola this fall. Everitt signed a letter of intent earlier this school year.
“It’s hard to let sports go knowing you can be a help to a team,” Everitt said. “[The coach at Trine] asked me to come play with her players. They thought I’d be a big help. I have a passion for it.”
At Trine, Everitt will study mechanical engineering, another passion he has further developed by taking engineering, math, and science classes and having an internship at ILPEA Industries Inc. through the professional career internship class at SHS.
“I love taking things apart,” Everitt said. “I had engineering skills from classes when I started my internship. At my internship, [my supervisor] would give me my own projects. He would make me figure out real-world problems. I was able to see the skills that I learned in engineering being applied into real life.”
Because Trine is a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III school, it does not offer athletic scholarships. However, as an honor student and in the top 10 percent of his graduating class, Everitt will receive an academic scholarship to attend Trine in the fall. He will have to maintain his grades to continue receiving his academic scholarship.
This summer, Everitt will continue to work to improve his tennis skills to prepare himself for competition at the collegiate level.
“Their team made me feel like I fit in. It was awesome getting to meet them,” Everitt said about his future teammates.
Everitt is the sixth senior this year to sign to play sports at the collegiate level in the fall.
